Spread The Net - 1 Net. 10 Bucks. Save Lives.
Throughout Africa, the threat of malaria is ever-present. It claims the life of almost 2,000 African children each day. However there is hope and a global growing movement to fight this disease. Sleeping under a simple, $10 long-lasting, insecticide-treated bed net is the most cost-effective and efficient way to prevent the spread of malaria. Founded in November 2006 by Belinda and Rick Mercer, the Spread the Net campaign powered in partnership with UNICEF Canada, has achieved what it first set out to do: raise enough funds to deliver 500,000 anti-malarial bed nets!

In just a few short years, Spread the Net has turned into an amazing success story thanks to the generosity of Canadians from coast-to-coast and to our Ambassadors, a group of well-known Canadians who have all lent their support to the campaign. Thousands of individuals, schools, communities, teams and corporations have joined the malaria fight donating $5 million to date or enough for 500,000 nets. When you consider that often up to five children or entire families sleep under one net, that translates into millions of lives saved.

Students and youth have played a particularly important role in the campaign and have, over the past three school years, via the Spread the Net Student Challenge, raised over $1 million or enough for over 100,000 nets. The 2010/2011 Student Challenge raised close to $104,000 for the purchase and distribution of bed nets. Congratulations goes out to the University of Northern British Columbia that raised over $18,000 and Espanola High School that raised over $13,000!

The Spread the Net campaign is designed to motivate, educate and inspire Canadians to raise awareness and funds for the purchase and distribution of long-lasting, insecticide-treated bed nets for children in Africa.

Great progress has been made but more nets are needed if we are going to reverse malaria incidence and ultimately deaths as the United Nations Millennium Development Goals have called upon us to do. So join Spread the Net in the fight against malaria!

World Malaria Day - April 25, 2011

Spread the Net would like to thank all individuals who supported us on World Malaria Day and donated funds for the purchase and distribution of bed nets to families in Africa.

Every 45 seconds, somewhere in the world, a child dies from malaria.

The cost of malaria on the African economy is estimated to be $12 billion dollars annually.

Monday April 25th marked World Malaria Day. An opportunity for all global citizens to focus their efforts and attention on the scourge of malaria and what everyone, as individuals, can do to make a difference.

Spread the Net, a campaign co-founded by the Honourable Belinda Stronach and comedian Rick Mercer, urges all Canadians to join in the fight against malaria.

For $10, all Canadians can be part of a cost-effective and efficient solution – bed nets. Long-lasting insecticide-treated bed nets are the best way to prevent the spread of malaria. Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) have been shown to reduce all-cause mortality in children under five by at least 20 percent. In areas of high malaria transmission, use of ITNs by pregnant women has been associated with reductions in the incidence of the malaria parasite of close to 40%.

Now that Spread the Net has reached its founding goal of distributing 500,000 bed nets to Rwanda and Liberia, we are working on a project-by-project, needs based approach with a variety of partners on the ground to purchase and distribute bed nets to some of the most malaria endemic countries in Africa. Our goal is to distribute 50,000 bed nets in 2011.

In February 2011, Spread the Net’s Student Challenge came to an end and raised over $104,263.44 – enough for 10,426 for bed nets! Our winning teams were the University of Northern British Columbia raising $18,710.09 and Espanola High School raising 13,307.91!

In April 2011, Spread the Net and Buy-A-Net Malaria Prevention Group joined forces to distribute 1,000 bed nets to families in the District of Kawempe, Uganda.

Thank you again for your outstanding support!
