OLPC Canada
Aboriginal youth are the fastest growing population in Canada, but many do not have access to the tools they need to realize their full poteand explore opportunities. Together with members of the Aboriginal community, corporate Canada and various governments, TBSF has brought the internationally-successful program, One Laptop Per Child, to Canada. TBSF will distribute up to 5,000 laptops to children aged six to twelve in Aboriginal communities across Canada. With support from Vale, BMO Financial Group and the Government of Ontario, the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) Canada program leverages leading-edge technology combined with culturally relevant programming to deliver a unique platform of learning tools to Aboriginal children.

News
On June 21st, 2011, OLPC Canada celebrated National Aboriginal Day by sharing the latest news on the One Laptop Per Child program. See the update here.
From April 17th to April 21st, 2011, in preparation for deployment of the XO 1.5 laptops that will reach up to 5,000 elementary students in Aboriginal communities across Canada, OLPC facilitated a five day training session for OLPC Canada’s team of thirteen ‘Champions’ from each of the thirteen pilot communities in Canada at the Tim Horton Children’s Foundation Onondaga Farms in St. George, Ontario.
Ekomini, an OLPC Canada content partner, presented OLPC Canada’s eight customized programs. All programs are interactive, narrated and designed to advance a child’s interest in learning.
The eight customized programs were created with the needs of Aboriginal children in mind and include:
• Literacy
• Virtual Library
• Financial Literacy
• Physical Education
• Nutrition
• Water Safety
• Mental Health Issues
• A Science of Sound Program
The OLPC Canada training strengthens local technological capacity by providing the ‘Champions’ with a strong understanding of OLPC learning theory and styles of instruction. The OLPC Canada ‘Champions’ will utilize this knowledge to assist in developing innovative curriculum materials and learning content that utilizes OLPC XO technology, including monitoring the computer infrastructure in the schools.
